HubSpot Data Enrichment: Native Options vs Third Party Tools

TL;DR:

HubSpot data enrichment fills missing job title, seniority, location, and company firmographic fields on records you already own. It ships with every paid HubSpot plan and burns zero credits. It will not hand you a contact's email address or phone number, and it skips any contact record that lacks a business email to begin with.

Key insights

  • Native enrichment covers 14 contact properties and 26 company properties. Contact email and contact phone appear on neither list.
  • Business email required. A contact without one never gets enriched. Gmail, Yahoo, and other personal domains get skipped.
  • Standard enrichment consumes zero HubSpot Credits. HubSpot states this outright in its documentation.
  • Credits still apply elsewhere. Smart properties, intent signals, and AI agents all meter. Intent monitoring runs 10 credits per company per month.
  • Included credits by tier: 500 on Starter, 3,000 on Professional, 5,000 on Enterprise. Data Hub and Customer Platform bundles get more.
  • Credits expire monthly with no rollover. Overage runs $0.010 per credit, or $10 per 1,000 credit capacity pack.
  • Automatic enrichment ships switched off. A super admin turns it on for contacts and companies as two separate settings.
  • Index page bulk enrichment caps at 100 records per action. Segments, imports, and workflows scale past it.
  • Free HubSpot CRM gets no enrichment. Starter at $20 per seat is the floor.
  • Third party tools earn their cost on four things: mobile numbers, non US coverage, verified email at the point of use, and real technographic depth.

HubSpot data enrichment does something narrower than the name suggests, and the gap costs teams real pipeline.

Your records look finished. Job titles populated, seniority tagged, LinkedIn URLs in place, revenue bands filled in. Routing works. Scoring works. Then a rep tries to reach somebody and finds nothing on the record to reach them with.

That is not a bug. HubSpot built enrichment to complete records, not to source contact details. Teams find the gap three months after switching it on (usually in a pipeline review, which is the worst venue for it).

What follows is the full field list and the 2026 credit costs, pulled from HubSpot's own product catalog. Plus the limits nobody mentions on a sales call. Plus an honest read on where a second tool earns its keep.

What Is HubSpot Data Enrichment?

HubSpot data enrichment automatically fills property values on contact and company records. It pulls from HubSpot's commercial dataset, third party providers, and public information across the web.

The feature sits inside Breeze Intelligence, which grew out of HubSpot's Clearbit acquisition in late 2023. If you remember paying per credit for Clearbit lookups, that model has changed. The full Clearbit enrichment story covers what survived the transition.

1. How HubSpot matches a record

The matching logic is simple, which is both its strength and its ceiling.

  • Contacts: HubSpot uses first name, last name, and work email address.
  • Companies: HubSpot uses the company domain name.

If the platform confirms a match across more than one source, it writes the values into your CRM properties.

2. Where the data comes from

Three sources feed the dataset:

  1. HubSpot's own commercial dataset, built partly from customer enrichment activity
  2. Licensed third party data providers
  3. Public information across the web

HubSpot scores and weighs each source per property, then picks the value it rates highest. A human quality team reviews the dataset for consistency on top of the automated checks.

3. Which subscriptions include it

Enrichment ships with Marketing Hub, Sales Hub, Service Hub, Data Hub, and Content Hub at Starter, Professional, and Enterprise. Smart CRM and Revenue Hub carry it at Professional and Enterprise only.

Free HubSpot CRM gets no contact or company enrichment. Free accounts do get the Intelligence tab with limited firmographic data, plus the data test tool. That makes a useful trial run before you pay for anything.

HubSpot Data Enrichment Features Reviewed

Ten features sit under the enrichment umbrella. Knowing which ones bill differently is the part that saves money.

1. Automatic enrichment

New contact and company records get enriched at creation. This fills blank properties only. It never overwrites a value a user or another system already set.

Both toggles ship off by default, one for contacts and one for companies.

2. Continuous enrichment

Previously enriched records refresh monthly as new data lands.

One behavior catches teams out. If a rep edits an enriched property by hand, continuous enrichment stops updating that property permanently. HubSpot treats the manual edit as a signal that a human owns the field now.

Worth knowing: continuous enrichment alone contributes nothing back to HubSpot's shared dataset.

3. Individual record enrichment

Open a record, click the Intelligence tab, hit Enrich record, then tick the properties you want. You get a per-property choice here that bulk mode does not offer.

Manual enrichment can overwrite existing values if you configure it that way.

4. Bulk and segment enrichment

Four routes exist:

  • Index page: select records, click Enrich records. Capped at 100 records per action.
  • Segment: open a segment, Actions, then Enrich segment. No 100 record cap.
  • Import: tick the Enrich records box during a CSV import.
  • Workflow: add the Enrich Record action to a contact or company workflow.

Bulk mode enriches every eligible property. You lose the per-property control.

Segment enrichment is the underrated one here. It updates thousands of records in a single pass, which makes it the fastest route to a clean lead enrichment baseline.

5. Enrichment workflow actions

The Enrich Record workflow action is the one serious ops teams should build around. Set enrollment criteria, drop in the action, and enrichment fires on creation rather than on somebody remembering to run it.

This is also how you tier spend, which I cover further down. Any serious CRM data enrichment at scale program lives in workflows, not in manual clicks.

6. Data test

Before you commit, HubSpot shows the percentage of enrichment coverage available for your contact and company records.

Run this first. It answers the coverage question faster than any vendor call, and it works on free accounts.

7. Form shortening

A visitor starts filling out a form. HubSpot checks the enrichment dataset for data it already holds, then hides the fields it can fill itself.

Fewer fields, higher conversion, same data captured. Honestly one of the better arguments for turning enrichment on at all. (Conversion lift varies by form length, so treat it as a direction rather than a number.)

8. Intelligence tab

A tab on company and contact records showing website visit activity and data hygiene alongside the enrich button.

9. Smart properties

AI-researched fields that answer questions about a record using your CRM data, calls, emails, and the web. You review and approve each answer before it saves.

Smart properties consume HubSpot Credits. Standard enrichment does not. That distinction is the single biggest source of surprise bills.

10. Intent signals and buyer intent

Intent tracking layers funding announcements, high-intent page visits, and job changes onto tracked companies. Research intent analyzes topics across 200,000 websites.

All of it meters against credits. Rates sit in the pricing section below.

Which Fields Does HubSpot Native Enrichment Fill?

HubSpot publishes the exact property list. Reading it saves a lot of guessing.

1. Contact properties HubSpot can enrich

  1. City
  2. Country
  3. Country Code
  4. Employment Role
  5. Employment Seniority
  6. Employment Sub Role
  7. First Name
  8. Job Title
  9. Last Name
  10. LinkedIn URL
  11. State or Region
  12. State or Region Code
  13. Enrichment opt-out
  14. Enrichment opt-out timestamp

That is the whole set.

2. Company properties HubSpot can enrich

Company records do considerably better. HubSpot fills 26 properties:

  • Size and money: annual revenue, revenue range, number of employees, employee range, total money raised
  • Classification: industry, industry group, company keywords, description, is public, year founded
  • Location: street address, city, state or region, state code, country, country code, postal code
  • Web and social: website URL, company domain name, LinkedIn page, LinkedIn handle, Facebook page, X handle
  • Other: company name, phone number, web technologies

For account scoring and segmentation, that set holds up. I would stop paying a separate vendor for basic basic firmographics data if HubSpot already fills these on your accounts.

3. What native enrichment never gives you

Read the contact list again and the absence jumps out.

  • No email address. Not a second one, not a verified one, not any.
  • No mobile number.
  • No direct dial. The company phone field is a switchboard line.
  • No department or reporting line.
  • No buying group mapping.

So the input is an email, and the output never includes one. HubSpot rounds out a record. It cannot find a person.

HubSpot Data Enrichment Requirements and Limits

1. Records that do not qualify

Three rules disqualify a record before enrichment runs:

  • Contacts without a business email address. Personal domains like Gmail and Yahoo get skipped.
  • Companies without a domain name. No domain, no match.
  • Records with nothing available to update. If HubSpot holds no new data, it leaves the record alone.

Rule one hurts the worst. Picture an inbound form that captured a first name and a personal address. Or a 4,000 row list your team pulled from LinkedIn with no emails attached. HubSpot skips all of it.

2. How HubSpot handles overwrites

Your existing values stay put unless you ask otherwise.

How each HubSpot data enrichment mode handles blank fields, overwrites, and manual edits.
ModeFills blanksOverwritesStops when a human edits
AutomaticYesNoNot applicable
ManualYesOptionalNot applicable
ContinuousYesUpdates its own valuesYes, permanently

Sensible defaults. Also the reason bad CRM data survives enrichment untouched. Cleaning comes first, enrichment second.

3. Volume and permission caps

  • Index page bulk enrichment: 100 records per action
  • Super Admin permission needed to change enrichment settings
  • A separate "Data enrichment access" permission controls which users can enrich at all
  • Super Admins keep manual enrichment rights even after you switch everything else off

That last one matters for anyone turning enrichment off for compliance reasons. Flipping the settings is not enough on its own.

4. The commercial dataset question

When you run contact or company enrichment, limited business contact data from that enrichment may flow back into HubSpot's shared commercial dataset. HubSpot restructured this after customer pushback in mid 2025.

Two facts worth carrying into a procurement conversation:

  • Continuous enrichment alone adds nothing back to the dataset.
  • Individuals can opt out through HubSpot's privacy preference form, and opted-out contacts get flagged in your CRM.

Your legal team should read the product specific terms. Do not trust a blog post, mine included.

HubSpot Data Enrichment Pricing in 2026

Plenty of ranking articles still price this at $0.30 to $0.45 per credit under the old Clearbit model. That pricing is dead.

1. What costs nothing extra

Per HubSpot's documentation, data enrichment does not consume HubSpot Credits. That covers contact and company enrichment, automatic, continuous, bulk, segment, and workflow actions. Form shortening and the data test run free too.

2. What you pay to get access

Enrichment rides on a paid subscription. The entry points:

HubSpot plan pricing and which tiers include contact and company data enrichment.
SubscriptionStarting priceNotes
Free CRM$0No enrichment
Smart CRM Starter$20 per seat per monthEnrichment included
Smart CRM Professional$50 per seat per monthAdds smart properties and intent
Smart CRM Enterprise$75 per seat per monthAdds governance and sandbox
Marketing Hub Professional$890 per month, 3 seatsPlus $3,000 one-time onboarding
Marketing Hub Enterprise$3,600 per month, 5 seatsPlus $7,000 one-time onboarding

The onboarding fees on Professional and Enterprise are mandatory. Budget them.

3. Included HubSpot Credits by tier

Credits power the metered features. Every paid plan includes an allowance:

Monthly HubSpot Credit allowances included with each subscription tier.
Subscription typeStarterProfessionalEnterprise
Smart CRM, Marketing, Sales, Service, Content, Revenue Hub5003,0005,000
Data Hub or Customer Platform bundle5005,00010,000

Two rules bite here:

  1. Credits do not stack across products. Run Marketing Hub Professional plus Sales Hub Enterprise and you get the Enterprise allowance, not the sum.
  2. Credits reset monthly with no rollover. Unused credits vanish.

4. What each metered feature costs

HubSpot publishes a credit rate sheet. The rates that touch enrichment work:

Credit cost per action for HubSpot features that meter against the credit allowance.
FeatureActionCredits
Intent signalsMonitor one company for one month10
Custom signals (beta)Monitor one company, one signal, one month50
Market segments (beta)Create one company record10
Data agentOne response for one record10
Prospecting agentRecommend outreach for one lead100
Workflow AI actionExecute one AI action10

Run the math before you switch anything on. Monitoring 300 companies for intent costs 3,000 credits a month, which swallows the entire Professional allowance on its own.

Custom signals hurt worse. Tracking 100 accounts on one custom signal runs 5,000 credits a month.

5. Buying more credits

Two routes:

  • Pay-as-you-go: $0.010 per credit, invoiced in blocks of 10
  • Capacity pack: $10 per additional 1,000 credits per month for the rest of your term

Pay-as-you-go resets to your original limit each month. Capacity packs raise your floor for the full term, so pick carefully.

6. What this costs in practice

Three scenarios using list pricing:

Small team, enrichment only. Three Smart CRM Starter seats at $20 each runs $60 a month. Enrichment costs nothing on top. Total: $60 a month.

Mid-market with intent tracking. Marketing Hub Professional at $890 a month, 3,000 included credits, monitoring 500 companies for intent at 10 credits each. That comes to 5,000 credits, so 2,000 over. Two capacity packs add $20. Total: $910 a month, plus the one-time $3,000 onboarding.

Enterprise with agents. Marketing Hub Enterprise at $3,600 a month, 5,000 included credits. Add 1,000 prospecting agent leads at 100 credits each and you need 100,000 credits. At $0.010 that is $1,000 in overage. Total: $4,600 a month, plus $7,000 onboarding.

Enrichment itself stays free in all three. The AI layer on top is where budgets break.

Native vs Third Party HubSpot Enrichment: Side by Side

The row that decides your budget is the one about records with no email. Everything else is a question of depth.

Four Gaps Third Party HubSpot Enrichment Tools Fill

1. Mobile numbers and direct dials

This is the whole argument for outbound teams. Native enrichment returns zero contact-level phone numbers, so your SDRs get a switchboard and a gatekeeper.

Coverage rates separate vendors fast. SMARTe carries 75%+ US mobile and direct dial coverage plus 50%+ global direct dial coverage across 200+ countries.

What to do: ask any vendor for the fill rate against your own target list, not their sample. Understanding what verified B2B direct dials do to connect rates gives you a floor to negotiate against.

2. Coverage outside North America

HubSpot's commercial dataset leans US. If your ICP includes DACH, LATAM, or APAC, the fill rate drops in ways the feature page does not mention.

Run 200 known-good records from each region through the data test tool and compare. I have watched that exercise settle a renewal debate in an afternoon.

3. Verified email at the point of use

Native enrichment cannot supply an email. It also does not verify the one you gave it. A stale address stays stale and bounces on send.

Third party tools verify at retrieval rather than at the last database refresh. SMARTe reports 86% US decision-maker email reachability on verified addresses. Pair that with proper email verification tools and your sending domain survives the quarter.

4. Technographic and signal depth

HubSpot populates a Web Technologies field by reading what a site publicly exposes. Useful, shallow.

Real depth means renewal windows and replacement patterns. SMARTe tracks 64K+ technologies, and dedicated technographic data providers go further still. Same story for intent, where acting on the buying signals worth tracking needs a source built for it rather than a metered add-on.

When Is HubSpot Native Enrichment Enough?

Three situations where buying a second tool wastes money.

  • You run marketing-led inbound with no outbound motion. Form fills already carry the email. You need firmographics for routing and scoring, and native enrichment delivers those free. Feed the fields into your lead scoring model and stop.
  • Your ICP is US mid-market and tech-heavy. That is the sweet spot of HubSpot's dataset. Fill rates hold.
  • You add under 500 new records a month. Integrating and governing a second system costs more than it returns at that volume.

Let me qualify the second one. Geography helps less than industry does. HubSpot thins out on privately held manufacturers and regional healthcare groups even inside the States. That is where private company data providers earn their fee. Test before you trust it.

How to Run Native and Third Party Enrichment Together

The failure I see over and over: two systems writing the same field, and nobody decided who wins.

1. Assign field ownership before you switch anything on

Write it down as a table. One row per property, one column naming the system of record.

What to do: let HubSpot own firmographics, job title, seniority, and location. Let your third party tool own email, mobile, direct dial, and technographics. Never let both write the same property.

2. Tier which records get paid enrichment

Not every record deserves a paid credit. Rank them:

  1. Target accounts and open pipeline. Full enrichment, refreshed quarterly.
  2. High-intent inbound. Full enrichment on arrival.
  3. Everything else. Native enrichment only.
  4. Dormant records over 24 months old. Leave them, or archive them.

The 1-10-100 rule of data enrichment explains why fixing a record early beats fixing it later. Ignoring it costs the worst of all.

3. Sequence providers instead of stacking them

Paying two vendors to look up the same contact is waste. Waterfall enrichment sequencing calls the second provider only when the first one misses, which keeps cost per record down at volume. Tools like Clay for data enrichment exist mainly to orchestrate that sequence.

4. Protect the enrichment you already paid for

Records rot after you fill them. Track job changes on closed-won contacts, because a champion who moves companies is the cheapest pipeline you will ever source.

B2B data decay rates mean a record sourced eighteen months ago has a real chance of being wrong today.

How to Choose a HubSpot Data Enrichment Tool

Skip the feature grid. Five questions decide it.

  1. Does it write back into HubSpot without an ops project? Native app or workflow action, not a nightly CSV.
  2. What is the fill rate on your list? Send 500 records from your actual ICP. Above 70% mobile fill on a US list is strong.
  3. How does pricing map to how you work? Per-seat pricing punishes teams who enrich in bulk. Credit pricing punishes teams who enrich continuously.
  4. Can it prove data provenance? SOC 2 Type II, GDPR alignment, and CCPA compliance are table stakes for anything touching your CRM.
  5. Does coverage match your territories? Ask for US, UK, Germany, and Brazil separately. Aggregate numbers hide the holes.

Still shortlisting? How to choose a B2B data provider walks the evaluation. The best data enrichment tools covers the current field. Teams comparing named vendors can read Apollo data enrichment and ZoomInfo CRM enrichment side by side, and Salesforce data enrichment covers the other CRM.

Where SMARTe fits, and where it does not

I will be direct, since this article has spent 3,000 words arguing that vendors blur exactly this line.

SMARTe does not replace HubSpot's native enrichment. It fills what native leaves blank:

  • Reachability. 289M+ verified B2B contacts. 75%+ US mobile and direct dial coverage. 86% US decision-maker email reachability. 50%+ global direct dial coverage across 200+ countries, with LATAM and APAC depth where US-centric providers run thin.
  • Company depth. 66M+ company profiles and 64K+ technologies tracked.
  • Buying signals. Bombora intent built in, alongside funding events, leadership changes, and headcount growth.
  • Enrichment at scale. 90%+ CRM match rates with real-time verification, not a batch refresh you hope ran last quarter.
  • Compliance. SOC 2 Type II certified, GDPR aligned, CCPA compliant.

Pricing starts free with 10 credits a month. Pro runs $25 a month with no per-seat cost, so a team shares credits. Enterprise starts at $15,000 a year.

Where SMARTe fits poorly: if your only gap is firmographic fill on US mid-market accounts, HubSpot already does that job for free. Keep your budget.

See how SMARTe finds verified mobile numbers in your target accounts.

The Verdict on HubSpot Data Enrichment

Native enrichment is a good product for the job HubSpot built it to do. Free on a paid plan is a hard price to argue with. Turn it on. Run the data test first, set your field ownership rules, then let it fill the firmographic layer.

Then be honest about the ceiling. A tool that requires an email and never returns one cannot power outbound. If your reps spend their day trying to reach people, that gap is your whole problem, and no amount of configuration closes it.

A populated CRM field is not the goal. A conversation is. Every enrichment decision should trace back to one question: can a rep reach a real person who has a real reason to talk?

Run the fill-rate test on your own list before you renew anything. It takes an afternoon, and the answer is rarely what the deck promised.
