Cognism vs Apollo

Two names keep landing on the same shortlist. Cognism and Apollo.

Most teams compare them wrong. They line up feature grids and pick the longer one. But Cognism vs Apollo is not a feature fight. It's a bet on how your reps actually work.

Apollo sells you a full outbound stack at a price you can read on a web page. Cognism sells you phone-verified mobile numbers and a compliance story, and the price lives behind a sales call.

I have watched teams buy Cognism for a US email motion and waste $30,000. I have watched teams buy Apollo for German cold calling and burn a quarter. Same mistake both times. Nobody asked what the reps do all day.

And there's a third question almost nobody asks on this shortlist: what if you need both? US depth and European depth, verified mobiles and a sane price, in one contract. That's where SMARTe enters the conversation, and I'll get to it properly later (I work there, so I'll flag my bias every time it matters).

Let's go through all three.

Cognism vs Apollo at a Glance

The short version before the detail.

Cognism and Apollo compared across pricing, data coverage, mobile numbers, intent data and contract terms.

You can watch both scores move in real time on the G2 comparison page for Apollo and Cognism.

Now the part that decides your purchase.

What Apollo Does Well

Apollo isn't really a data company. It's a sales engagement platform that happens to own a database. That framing explains almost everything below.

1. One Login Instead of Four

Contact data, email sequences, a dialer, call recording, and CRM sync in one tool. For a five-person SDR team, that replaces a data vendor plus an engagement platform plus a dialer.

The savings are real. Apollo Professional at $79 per user throws in the US auto dialer. Build that stack separately and you'll pay more.

2. US Coverage That Holds Up

Apollo claims 240M+ people and 30M+ companies. In US mid-market, the coverage is good. Titles are mostly current. Firmographics are mostly right.

G2 reviewers score Apollo above Cognism on data accuracy (8.2 versus 7.8). That gap sits almost entirely on American records. If you're building a US-focused B2B contact database, Apollo is a defensible starting point.

3. You Can Test It Before You Pay

Free plan. Roughly 75 credits a month. Two active sequences. Thin, but enough to check whether your ICP exists in there at all.

Cognism gives you a 25-contact sample and a calendar invite.

4. The Chrome Extension Is Quick

Reps pull contacts off LinkedIn without switching tabs. We tested where it holds and where it drops records in our Apollo Chrome extension review. The short answer: solid on US profiles, patchy everywhere else.

It also slots into most LinkedIn prospecting workflows without much setup.

What to do: If your team already sequences in Outreach or Salesloft, Apollo's bundled outreach is dead weight you're paying for. Price it as a pure data tool and the comparison shifts.

Also read: Apollo vs ZoomInfo if you're weighing Apollo against the incumbent instead.

What Cognism Does Well

Cognism built its entire business around one problem. Reps calling European buyers couldn't get a number that worked.

1. Phone-Verified Mobile Numbers

Diamond Data is the answer. A human dials the number and confirms it reaches the named person. Cognism claims 98% accuracy on that verified subset and says teams connect with 87% of a prospecting list.

Those are vendor figures, so discount them a little. But the method is real and almost nobody runs it at that scale.

This is the single biggest reason teams choose Cognism over Apollo. Not database size. Dial quality. The gap between a guessed number and a verified B2B direct dial shows up in your connect rate inside a week. It changes what your whole cold calling database is worth.

It also changes how often reps get past the gatekeeper, because a mobile skips the switchboard entirely.

2. European Depth

Cognism runs research teams inside Europe. Apollo publishes no regional breakdown at all, which tells you plenty on its own.

Selling into Germany, France, the Nordics, or Benelux? Cognism's European contact data is deeper. Docfield reported Apollo and Lusha were inconsistent on EU prospects while Cognism held at roughly 80% accuracy.

3. Compliance That Survives Legal Review

Here's where Cognism pulls away hard.

  • Screens against DNC and TPS registries across 15 countries
  • ISO 27001, ISO 27701, and SOC 2 Type II certified
  • Excludes personal email addresses from the database
  • Does not use your uploaded data to enrich its own dataset
  • Cites GDPR Article 6.1(f) as its lawful basis

That fourth bullet matters more than buyers realise. Apollo's terms grant it a perpetual licence to customer-submitted data. For a regulated buyer, that one line ends the deal.

If compliance shapes your shortlist, work through GDPR and cold calling rules before either demo. Calling into the US? State do not call laws and CCPA compliance will shape your dialing list too. Canadian lists bring CASL into it.

Honestly, most teams underweight this until procurement blocks the purchase. What compliant B2B data actually requires is worth reading before you sign anything.

4. Credits That Don't Evaporate

One credit reveals one contact. View it again, free. You spend again only when that person changes jobs.

Apollo pools credits across the team and wipes the balance at the end of each cycle.

Also read: Cognism vs ZoomInfo for the enterprise comparison most buyers run next.

Cognism vs Apollo Pricing: The Real Numbers

This is where the comparison stops being close.

Apollo Pricing

Apollo moved to a single unified credit pool. Mobile numbers, email reveals, and exports all draw from one balance.

Apollo.io pricing plans showing annual and monthly per-user cost, monthly credit allowance and minimum seats.
PlanAnnual (per user/mo)MonthlyCredits per user/moMin seats
Free$0$0~751
Basic$49$59 to $652,5001
Professional$79$994,0001
Organization$119Annual only6,0003

Apollo uses one unified credit pool. A mobile reveal costs 8 credits, an email reveal 1, an export 1. Credits do not roll over.

A mobile reveal costs 8 credits. An email reveal costs 1. An export costs 1.

Run the math and Professional gives each rep roughly 500 mobile numbers a month if they spend nothing else. Credits don't roll over. Unused balance disappears.

Our Apollo.io pricing breakdown covers the older split-credit model and the upgrade triggers, though the unified pool is what you'll see quoted now.

Cognism Pricing

A platform fee lands before you pay for a single seat.

Estimated Cognism annual cost on the Grow and Elevate tiers by number of users.
UsersGrow (approx)Elevate (approx)
1$16,500$27,500
3$19,500$32,500
5$22,500$37,500
10$30,000$50,000

Cognism does not publish pricing. Figures are approximate, based on reported contracts, and exclude onboarding of $500 to $1,500.

Add onboarding of $500 to $1,500. Add 10% to 15% renewal increases unless you negotiate a cap. Add $200 to $400 per extra intent topic beyond the 12 included in Elevate.

The full Cognism pricing breakdown lists negotiated discount ranges, which run 28% to 52% by tier.

The Honest Comparison

A five-person team pays roughly $4,740 a year for Apollo Professional. The same team pays roughly $22,500 for Cognism Grow.

Close to 5x.

Now, to be fair to Cognism, those aren't equivalent products. Apollo at $79 gives you thinner mobile data and no European depth. A team burning 300 extra mobile reveals a month sees Apollo's real cost climb.

But I'll say it plainly. Below five seats, Cognism's platform fee is almost impossible to justify. The fee doesn't shrink for small teams.

Where Each Platform Actually Breaks

Every data vendor has a weak spot. Here are theirs.

Apollo's Weak Spot: Everything Outside North America

Reviewers report bounce rates of 15% to 25% on non-US sends. Titles go stale. Mobile numbers skip whole regions.

Apollo doesn't phone-verify either. The number in the record was found, not called.

Run every Apollo list through email verification tools before you send. I treat that as non-negotiable, and a pass through proper email deliverability tools is worth the extra step on cold domains.

Apollo's enrichment has the same ceiling. We dug into the match-rate problem in our breakdown of Apollo data enrichment.

Cognism's Weak Spot: North America and the Price Floor

Cognism claims leading US mobile coverage. User reports are mixed. The in-region depth that makes it strong across EMEA doesn't fully carry over to Chicago or Austin.

Then there's the floor. A three-person startup pays $19,500 before it makes one dial.

And a third issue nobody raises: export limits. Grow gives you one list of up to 250 contacts. Elevate gives ten lists of 500. Run CRM data enrichment at real volume and you'll hit that wall in week two. Our Cognism review goes deeper on where the platform frustrates heavy users.

Both: Data Decay

Neither platform solves this. Contact data rots whether you bought it from Cognism or Apollo.

Roughly a quarter to a third of B2B records break every year. People move. Companies restructure. We covered the mechanics in B2B data decay, and the downstream damage in bad CRM data.

The fix is identical for both vendors. Re-verify on a schedule, or buy from a source doing real-time B2B data verification rather than quarterly batch refreshes. Watching job changes across your database catches another chunk before your sequence finds out the hard way.

Intent Data and Signals: A Smaller Gap Than Either Vendor Claims

Cognism partners with Bombora exclusively. Apollo uses Bombora plus LeadSift.

Cognism argues LeadSift leans on web scraping while Bombora runs on a consent-based cooperative of 5,000+ B2B sites. Fair point, though I think it carries less weight than Cognism's marketing implies.

Intent only pays off when someone acts on it inside 48 hours. Most teams don't. If your SDRs aren't working buying signals daily, extra intent topics are money set on fire.

Three things worth reading before you buy either. Our breakdown of Bombora intent data. The difference between first-party and third-party intent data. And how to build an intent data scoring model reps will actually follow.

Neither tool handles person-level intent well, which is the signal most teams actually want. Our roundup of the best intent data providers puts both in wider context.

How to Pick Between Cognism and Apollo

Skip the feature grid. Answer four questions.

  1. Where do your buyers sit? Mostly US, lean Apollo. Mostly Europe, lean Cognism.
  2. Do reps dial or email? Dial-heavy teams need verified mobiles. Email-heavy teams don't.
  3. How many seats? Under five, Cognism's platform fee hurts badly. Over ten, the per-seat math narrows.
  4. Does legal review your vendors? If yes, Cognism's certifications save you a month of back and forth.

What to do: Ask both vendors for a sample built from your real ICP, not their demo list. Pull 50 contacts. Call the numbers yourself. Whatever the deck claims, your connect rate on that sample is the only number that counts.

SMARTe: Built for Enterprise Teams That Sell in More Than One Region

Fair warning. I work at SMARTe. Read this section with that in mind, then go verify it yourself with a sample.

Teams land here after a Cognism vs Apollo bakeoff for one reason. Cognism owns Europe. Apollo owns the US. If you sell into both, plus LATAM or APAC, neither one covers your map. So you buy two tools, pay two platform fees, and spend your RevOps hours deduping between them.

Data Quality and Global Coverage

SMARTe runs 289M+ verified B2B contacts and 66M+ company profiles across 200+ countries.

  • 75%+ US mobile and direct dial coverage, which is where Apollo thins out fast
  • 50%+ global direct dial coverage, which is where Cognism stops at the EU border
  • 86% of US decision-makers reachable with a verified email
  • Real regional depth in LATAM and APAC, the markets where most vendors run on guesswork

Verification runs in real time, at the point of use. Not a quarterly batch refresh. That single difference is why bounce rates behave, and it's the same logic behind good B2B data generally.

Enrichment and CRM Match Rates

Enrichment hits 90%+ match rates at scale, through API or bulk. Job change tracking runs automatically, so records repair themselves instead of quietly rotting.

If your stack is Salesforce, Salesforce data enrichment runs native. HubSpot teams get the same through HubSpot data enrichment. Engineering-led teams go straight at the data enrichment API or the company data API.

RevOps teams report 60%+ less manual work once enrichment runs on a schedule. Our walkthrough of SMARTe B2B data enrichment covers the setup, and waterfall enrichment explains how to layer SMARTe under a tool you already own.

Buying Signals and Intent

Bombora intent is built in, not sold as a per-topic upsell. On top of that, SMARTe tracks funding rounds, leadership changes, and headcount growth, then scores accounts by buying readiness.

AI agents auto-discover the full buying group per account, which is the part most tools leave to the rep. More on why that matters in B2B buying group and buying group intelligence, plus a market view in platforms for identifying buying group members.

Technographics

64K+ products tracked. Cognism includes 12 technographic fields on its top tier. Apollo's technographic data is thinner than its marketing suggests.

That depth lets you find replacement opportunities instead of guessing. See technographic data providers for the comparison, and the difference between firmographic and technographic data if you're deciding which filters to build lists on.

MCP: Where SMARTe Is Genuinely Ahead

This is the part neither competitor has answered yet.

SMARTe ships a Model Context Protocol server. Your AI assistant, ChatGPT or Claude, queries verified B2B data live. No export. No CSV. No tab switching. A rep asks for the buying group at a target account and gets real records back inside the chat.

Cognism has no MCP server. Apollo has no MCP server.

If your team is building AI workflows, read Model Context Protocol explained, then MCP servers for sales and our list of the best MCP servers. Claude users should look at the best Claude connectors and Claude for lead enrichment.

It plugs into agent stacks too. See how SMARTe powers Outreach AI and the SMARTe and Clay integration.

Pricing Built for Enterprise, Priced Below It

Enterprise plans start at $15,000 a year. Credit-based, at $0.30 per credit, dropping to $0.20 at a million credits. No per-seat fees.

That last part is the one that changes budgets. Add a rep to Cognism and you add $1,500 to $2,500 a year. Add a rep to Apollo and you add $948. Add a rep to SMARTe and you add nothing. The team shares credits.

Compliance covers SOC 2 Type II, GDPR alignment, and CCPA. Finastra, Dell, Accenture, Salesforce, Informatica, and Uber run on it.

And you don't have to rip Apollo out to fix its data. The SMARTe and Apollo integration lets you keep Apollo for sequencing and swap the data layer underneath.

Reading That Table Honestly

Apollo wins on entry price and on bundling. If you're a four-person startup selling to US SMBs and you want one tool, buy Apollo. I'd tell you that even on a sales call.

Cognism wins on EU phone verification and on procurement. If you dial Munich every day and your legal team reads vendor terms line by line, Cognism earns its premium.

SMARTe wins when the map gets wide and the team gets big. Multi-region coverage, no per-seat tax, real-time verification, technographics with actual depth, and an MCP server your AI stack can query. For an enterprise team at 20 seats, the per-seat math alone separates these three fast.

Want the wider market? Our roundups of sales intelligence tools, the best AI sales intelligence tools, and AI GTM tools cover what else is on the table. Measuring the purchase afterwards? Sales intelligence ROI has the framework.

Conclusion

Pick the tool that matches how your reps spend their hours, not the one with the longer feature page. A database nobody dials is just a spreadsheet you rented.

The teams winning outbound right now aren't the ones with the most records. They're the ones who reach a real person on the first attempt, in whatever country that person happens to sit in, and then have something worth saying when the call connects.
